RL Grime, the stage name of Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Henry Steinway, combines hip-hop, electro, drum’n’bass, and a number of other bass-heavy genres to produce the music that he’s starting to see bigger success from.
Beginning with a project in 2011 by means of Internet uploads, RL Grime made a more official debut into the music world with the Grapes EP, released in 2012 by the WeDidItCollective. RL Grime is currently an active member of the WeDidIt Collective with produces like Shlohmo and D33J and has collaborated with artists such as Baauer, Skrillex, and Big Sean. His full-length debut, Void, was released in 2014 to critical success and was a mix of genres like garage, EDM, and R&B. After releasing Void, RL Grime followed up with a remix album and a collaboration with What So Not called “Tell Me.” Additionally, a remix of the Weeknd’s “The Hills” followed as well.
In May of 2017, RL Grime announced that he was going to be releasing his second full-length album entitled Nova. In advance, Grime released “Reims” and “Stay for It” (with Miguel) in 2017. In early 2018, a pair of singles were released entitled “Pressure” and “Undo.” RL Grime has said about the album that “NOVA’ came from obsessive ideation on growth and on transition. The art and stories and the moments that inspired me through this record tend to explore this as well. The feeling of leaving behind what was, and of welcoming the foreign. Throughout the process, I had this vision of a ‘nova’ or of a star no bigger than a person launching from earth into outer space and expanding endlessly until its light was all that we could see. That’s the feeling I get from these records, infinite light.”
RL Grime will continue to rise in the EDM niche as Nova has risen to number one on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums. He continues to show that he is a force to be reckoned with for EDM.
